Fiberglass

Since the 1940's, fiberglass has improved our lives in many different ways. Some of the more common uses can be found in thermal insulators that help maintain comfortable room temperatures, pipe's insulators, filters that purify the air, reinforcements, automotive shell bodies, airplane components, spaceship construction, acoustic products that control noises, and ceiling and wall coverings. The list goes on, but the point is that fiberglass is an integral part of our daily lives whether we realize it or not.

It is important to remember that the fiberglass has several qualities, making it so useful: it does not burn, does not rot, it also does not absorb humidity nor scents. In addition, from the mechanical point of view it has a high tensile strength, which is the reason why fiberglass has become one of most useful synthetic products of our days.

Fiberglass belongs to family materials known as synthetic vitreous fibbers; it is compound of glass containing mineral wool and ceramic refractory fibbers.

There are two basic kinds of fiberglass :

A) Glass Wool fibers
There are used to isolate heat transference or noise or to filter air or liquids. These originate from fused glass that consists of metallic silicon, aluminum , boron, calcium, sodium and other oxides.

B) Continuous Glass Filament
The continuous glass filaments are used to make industrial fabrics and to reinforce and to support other materials such as felts for ceilings due to their uniform diameters. This last type of fiber is the one that is used in the manufacturing process of our tuning pieces.
